WhaleSharks!

This year has seen May be the month for Manta Rays, and June is fast becoming the month for WhaleSharks! Frequent sightings of the world’s largest fish have occurred along the local dive sites between Ras Um Sid and the Gardens. Oonas guests have been lucky enough to spot three in two days!

Manta Magic

There's been a buzz around the Bay for the last couple of weeks with a multitude of Manta Ray sightings being reported along some of the local dive sites near Naama Bay. The dive sites of Sodfa, Tower and Amphoras have all been suggested as hot spots for Manta activity, and 3 Mantas were spotted in a single dive at Tower!

This April Oonas DC played host to Sir WIlliam Borlase Grammar School, for the third year running. This year 16 students became newly qualified PADI Open Water Divers, and 4 became PADI Advanced Open Water Divers. Much fun was had by all and we look forward to their return visit next year!

Caught in the Act!

Thanks to Kevin Porter who took this rare photo of turtles mating earlier this month (March '08).

LIDS

The London International Dive Show 2008 is being held at the ExCel Center on the 8th and 9th of March. Oonas Dive Club will be there offering special deals, freebies and prizes, and we look forward to seeing you there too.

Help our Environment

With the world warming up and the environment suffering from our pollution, we as divers must do our bit to help. We have calculated (excluding flights) that to offset your emissions for a single days boat diving costs just 25pence. So to offset a typical 6 days diving holiday costs 1.50sterling. To find out more visit www.climatecare.org

EasyJet To Egypt

Starting this summer season, from the 30th March through to October, EasyJet will be running flights out of London Gatwick to Sharm el Sheikh.

Oonas joins FaceBook

Following the trend of the times, we now have our own group on the cyberspace socializing phenomenom that is Facebook. Log on and upload your holiday diving snaps and videos, or surf the site and have a look at other peoples snaps. It is strangely addictive, interesting and entertaining.

Introducing our newest Master Scuba Diver

Congratulations to Terry Moody who celebrated becoming our latest Master Scuba Diver at the end of May. During his trip to Oonas Dive Club, Terry did his Wreck and Enriched Air Specialities to complete the 5 specialities required to achieve this pinnacle of recreational diving. In recognition of his efforts, Terry’s name has been entered into PADI’s Master Scuba Diver Challenge Draw where monthly prizes are on offer as well as an annual prize of a diving holiday for two in the Rea Sea. Good Luck Terry! Anyone who would like more information about the Master Scuba Diver Challenge can look on PADI’s website a www.padi.com or e-mail us at info@oonasdiveclub.com.

Staff Changes

April saw us bidding farewell and good luck to Oonas Dive Club Manager, Darren Strachan (Dazzling Dazza Diver) who returned to his native Scotland after many years at the club. Nick Browne, whom many of you will already know, is now Centre Manager. Not wishing to ‘dive the desk’ all summer, Nick will be supported in the office by ‘new girl’ Corri Clarke. Nick and Corri can be easily contacted using the usual e-mail address info@oonasdiveclub.com.

Oonas School Days

Oonas Dive Club was very pleased to welcome back students and teachers from the Sir William Borlase Grammer School in Marlow and Therfield School in Leatherhead, Surrey. The schools visited over the Easter holidays with each spending a week in Oonas Hotel whilst completing an impressive number of courses. In all, 28 PADI Open Water and 19 PADI Advanced Open Water certifications were issued. During their time in the Red Sea, students also enjoyed starring in DVDs of their underwater activities – a great memento of a very successful week. Celebrations were held at the end of each week with a delicious barbeque on the rooftop bar of Oonas Hotel.

750 dives for JP

Special congratulations to Oonas regular and PADI Advanced Open Water Diver, John Parmiter, who has just completed his 750th dive whilst on his 24th visit to the club. Shortly to celebrate his 74th birthday, John (JP for short)is a wheelchair user having contracted polio in 1950. In between visits to the Red Sea, John also dons a dry suit and dives in Portland, Dorset. In the 9 years that he has been diving with Oonas Dive Club, John has earned a special place in the hearts of dive club staff, boat crew and customers with his enthusiasm and determination to overcome challenges. Well done JP, we look forward to many more dives with you!
